    Developing Ontology Support for Human Malaria Control Initiatives

    Malaria is one of the most common infectious diseases and an enormous public health problem in Sub-Sahara Africa, Asia and parts of America. In this paper, we discuss the development of the Human Malaria Control Ontology (HMCO) which contains general information on Malaria and epidemiological information that can help in the formulation of effective malaria control policies. The HMCO is aimed at providing interoperability support for the knowledge management of malaria control initiatives, and serve as an open semantic web infrastructure for malaria research and treatment

    Sequence alignment has to do with the arrangement of DNA, RNA, and protein sequences to identify areas of similarity. Technic ally, it involves the arrangement of the primary sequences of DNA, RNA, or protein to identify regions of similarity that may be a consequence of functional, structural, or evolutionary relationships between the sequences. Similarity may be a consequence of functional, s tructural, or evolutionary relationships between the sequences. If two sequences in an alignment share a common ancestor, mismatches can be interpreted as mutations, and gaps as insertions. Such information becomes of great use in vital areas such as the study of d iseases, genomics and generally in the biological sciences. Thus, sequence alignment presents not just an exciting field of study, but a field of great importance to mankind. In this light, we extensively studied about seventy (70) existing sequence alignment tools available to us. Most of these tools are not user friendly and cannot be used by biologists. The few tools that attempted both Local and Global algorithms are not ready available freely. We therefore implemented a sequence alignment tool (CU-Aligner) in an understandable, user-friendly and portable way, with click-of-a-button simplicity. This is done utilizing the Needleman-Wunsh and Smith-Waterman algorithms for global and local alignments, respectively which focuses primarily on DNA sequences. Our aligner is implemented in the Java language in both application and applet mode and has been efficient on all windows operating systems

    The alignment of biological sequences is a crucial tool in molecular biology and genome analysis. It helps to build a phylogenetic tree of related DNA sequences and also to predict the function and structure of unknown protein sequences by aligning with other sequences whose function and structure is already known. However, finding an optimal multiple sequence alignment takes time and space exponential with the length or number of sequences increases. Genetic Algorithms (GAs) are strategies of random searching that optimize an objective function which is a measure of alignment quality (distance) and has the ability for exploratory search through the solution space and exploitation of current results

    Building a Computer-Based Expert System for Malaria Environmental Diagnosis: An Alternative Malaria Control Strategy

    As a predominant environmental health problem in Africa, malaria constitutes a great threat to the existence of many communities. The harmful effects of malaria parasites to the human body cannot be underestimated. In this paper, an expert system for malaria environmental diagnosis was presented for providing decision support to malaria researchers, institutes and other healthcare practitioners in malaria endemic regions of the world. The motivation behind this work was due to the insufficient malaria control measures in existence and the need to provide novel approaches towards malaria control. A malaria expert system prototype was developed that involved a knowledge component, the application component (AC), the database system component (DC), the Graphical User Interface (GUI) component and the User component (UC). The User interface component was implemented using the Java Programming language. The application component was implemented using the Java Expert System Shell (JESS) and the Java IDE of Netbeans while the database component was implemented using SQL Server

    The dearth of medical experts in the developing world has subjected a large percentage of its populace to preventable ailments and deaths. Also, because of the predominant rural communities, the few medical experts that are available always opt for practice in the few urban cities. This consequently puts the rural communities at a disadvantage with respect to access to quality health care services. In this work, we designed and implemented XpertMalTyph; a novel medical diagnostic expert system for the various kinds of malaria and typhoid complications. A medical diagnostic expert system uses computer(s) to simulate medical doctor skills in diagnosis of ailments and prescription of treatments, hence can be used to provide the same service in the absence of the experts. XpertMalTyph is based on JESS (Java Expert System Shell) programming because of its robust inference engine and rules for implementing expert system

    A PQ tree is an advanced tree–based data structure, which represents a family of permutations on a set of elements. In this research article, we considered the significance of PQ trees and the Consecutive ones Problem to Computer Science and bioinformatics and their various applications. We also went further to demonstrate the operations of the characteristics of the Consecutive ones property by simulation, using high level programming languages. Attempt was also made at developing a PQ tree–Consecutive Ones analyzer, which could be instrumental not only as an educative tool to inquisitive students, but also serve as an important tool in developing clustering software in the field of bioinformatics and other application domains, with respect to solving real life problems

    The design and implementation of online medical record system (OMRS)

    Access to appropriate and credible medical information is essential. It is however saddening that many developing countries, especially in sub-Saharan Africa, have low or no access to information on personal health status. The Online Medical Record System (OMRS) is a departure from the traditional paper-based medical record system of healthcare practices to an Internet based medical record storage system. In this paper, we implemented OMRS software that has successfully been able to store, update and modify the patients\' medical history records. It also creates an appointment scheduler system and a platform for online consultation. OMRS allows patients control their own records while allowing doctors access when they need it. OMRS provides a way for doctors and patients to replace thick medical charts and swap information without the need for costly and time-consuming office visits. The advent of internet has made it possible for OMRS to come up with a way in which the problem of computerizing medical records effectively and sharing it can be solved. The OMRS would serve important national interests and it is believed that implementation of the OMRS will have a dramatic impact on the overall quality of healthcare delivery in developing countrie
